Something New for June

Something New
June, 2016
by Angela White

Marc slipped into the trees at the edge of the road, not far from where his vehicle was waiting. He scanned the area and saw dozens of fire engines crawling with yellow clothed men trying to extinguish the fire, but there were no signs of anyone else. Thick smoke blew over the dusty road and he quickly ran toward the street, drawing surprises from the firefighters.
“Hey man!”
“Where did you come from?”
Marc didn’t stop to answer the busy men. They had worked to do and he needed to get out of here.
Marc jogged down the side of the road, darting around wildlife that was still fleeing ahead of the flames. The three walls of fire had merged now to create one long bank of death that was destroying everything in its path. Marc wasn’t even sure he would be able to use this road to get off the mountain.
His worn-out Jeep came into view, causing Marc to increase speed as relief gave him an extra burst of adrenaline. He slid into the driver’s seat, reaching for the keys that he’d left in the ignition.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
Marc froze at the sound of a gun being cocked. He didn’t need to scan the tall, thin figure to know who it was. He had recognized the voice.
“Is the boss’s wife still smiling?” Marc taunted.
The nasty punch took him by surprise, even though he had instigated it. Marc slumped in the seat, dazed from the temple shot. Rough hands pushed him over and slid behind the wheel of his jeep.
Marc struggled to come out of the daze, but another fist slammed into his forehead and everything went dark.

The familiar movement of his jeep in unfamiliar hands brought Marc back to alertness. He’d known someone might be waiting, but he’d been in such a hurry to get out that he’d forgotten to check underneath the vehicle. That was a common place for this type of hunter.
Sucking in a breath against his boiling guts, Marc used his elbow and all of his weight to slam into the driver, neatly shoving the man up and out of the vehicle. Open tops were convenient.
The man hit the ground beside the Jeep and skidded down the incline, screaming as his ankle snapped.
Marc didn’t waste any sympathy. These hunters were as ruthless as they came. Thankfully, they weren’t very smart.
Marc pulled the Jeep onto a wider area of the road, and killed the engine. There were still at least half a dozen men tracking him, and he wasn’t about to lead them back to his hotel room. He would never get to sleep.
Marc exited the vehicle and took up a stationary position in the weeds around the warm jeep. He didn’t think it would be long for someone discovered his new location. He was a prize target in a great place to be taken. No longer protected by his team or society, Marc was just another animal alone in the wilderness. Anything could happen out here. To them. He didn’t plan on mercy. Interrupting his vacation had been a huge mistake. The enemy hadn’t given him time to cool off or relax. They’d come for the civilian. They would get the Marine.

LAW Day #10-Rick

Richard T. Boone

Age: 35
6/1/77
Height: 6'1
Weight: 190lb
Shifty green eyes
Caucasian
Brown hair
Always has dirty fingernails

Before War: Janitor and inmate at a correctional facility

After War: Traitor to his country and mass murderer.

Birth State: New Mexico

Quote: "I gave him this camp for our freedom."

Strengths

- He's Loyal. He'll never betray Cesar

- He likes the New World. Never looks back at the past.

- Great at blending and pretending, like any other successful predator.

Weaknesses

- He likes raping teenagers and abusing women. It makes him feel like a man.

FBI Notes

Crimes: Attempted sexual assault, assault and battery of a minor.

Back-story

Raise as a ward of the state, Rick never knew his parents; 18 years in an orphanage turned him into a solitary creature with cruel tendencies. Was he abused there? I think that’s a safe assumption.

At 16, he was fired from a local store for theft and at 19 committed his first felony. The car he stole was never found. Neither was the bank’s money and he was never arrested. At 23 he was picked up for flashing young girls from his car but again, the system failed, Just a year later, he tried to rape a teenager in the washroom on a theater he worked at. She was hurt in the process and he finally went to jail. When the war came, he was serving 8 years and working as a janitor due to good behavior. Rick opened the cell doors of the prison, allowing the other dangerous inmates freedom. When Cesar arrived to save his family, Rick saved his life and was rewarded with slavery instead of death. Rick is the only white male Cesar and his slaves have left alive

So, what’s up with Rick? He’s bad. From his shifty green eyes, down to his dirty fingernails. He loathes authority enough to side with Cesar against his own countrymen. He loves the thrill of still being alive even though no one else has survived the Slavers custody. When he’s sent in the first time to betray a town, he feels guilt, but as time goes on and he commits the same crimes over and over, he becomes immune to that little voice of right and wrong.
Sam was a surprise. Rick likes his females young and struggling…until Samantha. For the first time, he had a willing woman! And he wants her back. He’s been watching Neil and Jeremy get closer to her, his rage growing as the Eagles keep him from doing anything about it. So, he’s come up with his own plan. He knows the trooper wants Little Becky, too. If he gets her first, willingly, then he’s beaten Neil to it. Other than helping Cesar conquer Safe Haven, it’s his only goal. Pay Neil back for stealing his woman.
Now that Rick has been discovered as the traitor, he’s lurking on the fringes, still using the Eagles uniform he got Matt to steal for him in exchange for a bottle. Rick sensing weaknesses and uses them, no matter the age or outcome…like with Maria. She may have never turned on Safe Haven if not for Rick. Instead, he got her killed.

Next Week: Luke and Kendle

LAW Day #9- Little Becky + Deleted Scene from Book One

Rebecca Ann Kelly

Age: 15
Height: 5’4’
Weight: 115 LBS
Green eyes
Cute, flirty
Redheaded
Dimples
Set on being Neil’s woman
Likes danger, thrills
Shoots well for only 15

Becky is just starting to explore her new femininity and the hormones encourage her reckless streak. She’s not a bad kid, but her lack of direction makes her slightly dangerous to herself.
That’s where Rick came in. See, he can sense it, that few months before she’s a woman, and he knows Neil can too. Rick likes her, who wouldn’t? But he wants her only because the state trooper does.

So what does the future hold for Miss Kelly?

Danger and more angst until she grows up a little more, though that road may be rough.  After that? Well, this deleted scene from book one will give you a clue.

“Everyone shooting must sign in. Only people that have passed the gun class can enter. Shooters will stay in front of the gate, everyone else behind. Sign in folks and let’s get started.”
Jeremy was the MC tonight, Neil’s second Eagle, and as Adrian stepped by, he again caught a whiff of perfume he now recognized as Cynthia’s but said nothing. He wasn’t worried the Eagle would slip with anything he shouldn’t. Before the war, Jeremy had been a devout Catholic, quiet and observant. He knew the meaning of secrecy and he’d found his place here, something the church had been unable to provide. The guard would be careful with it.
There was standing room only in the bleachers, a large crowd lining the gate as the shooters signed in, and checked their weapons. Adrian was glad to see no real fear, no desperation in the faces of his people. The watching crowd talked loudly, betting on their favorites as they sat in chairs in the sand or on thick blankets, and the men shooting waited behind the gate, eager to start.
“Okay. We have 29 shooters tonight,” Jeremy announced and Adrian stepped over to the clipboard on the bales of hay.
“Make that 30.”
The crowd cheered loudly and the other shooters groaned.
“First, Kenn Harrison.”
The sun was gone now, the night dark and gritty, but the moon’s outline, while not clear, gave some light and made people feel better just to be able to look up and finally find it in the sky. It was something they hadn’t seen much of for almost a hundred days.
The area was still dim, but huge spotlights on top of the trucks lit up the ball field and roller-bound targets. The ones set at 25 and 50 feet were hardly a challenge to the men watching his XO get set, but the ones at 100 and 125 were, and all the contestants knew they would likely be gone before round seven. He and Kenn had dueled it out last time, easily leaving everyone else behind. When they were shooting, no one else stood a chance.
“As many direct hits as you can, any target. On your mark.”
The Marine grinned, holding the gun steady against the gusty wind, accounting for it, and then he was firing smoothly.
The crowd cheered when the call came and the guards on the perimeter stayed alert, knowing the noise would carry.
“Eight bulls eyes! Next, Adrian Mitchell.”
The blond checked his weapon, and then put it back into his holster, letting his hand hang loosely like an old west gunslinger. The newer people, who hadn’t yet seen him shoot, watched nervously, sure he would miss and prove he was as fallible as the rest of those who had tried to lead.
Adrian’s hand was a blur as he drew and fired, fired, fired. He twirled the black 9mm a single time and slid it neatly into the holster on his hip.
“Eight bulls-eyes!”
The crowd roared and Jeremy had to shout to be heard as Adrian grinned, stepped over to Kenn.
“Next, Kyle Reece.”

No one missed a shot until the end of the round. Mary and Heather, two females he’d sent to the class for match-making purposes, didn’t get any bulls-eyes, but Adrian was pleased that they had hit anything at all. For the women here, that was definite progress.
The third woman, Lexa, was a gun shop owner from Los Angeles. Short, with a big chest and a long, brown ponytail, she hit half the targets, making Adrian wish he could add her to his list for the next Level One’s. Her draw was beautiful, almost a perfect copy of his, and with a little instruction, it would become as natural to her as breathing. He wondered if he would ever get his Eagles to accept women on the teams. Adrian needed one of these shell shocked females to be a warrior in disguise that could hold her own among his army and make the rest of the camp accept it too. For now though, it looked like Lexa was eliminated.
“Last shooter. Rebecca Ann Kelly.”
The cute teenager moved toward the line and Adrian frowned as the crowd cheered and catcalled. Had she passed the gun class somehow without him knowing it? There was always a wait because he hand-filled over half the seats.
Adrian watched her, almost certain she hadn’t, and instead of immediately calling her on it, the blond let her have one try, thinking again of how much he needed one of these timid homemakers to really be Xena, the warrior Princess. Becky was innocent, sexy, playful, and many of his men were watching the slender girl, waiting for her sixteenth birthday in October, when it would be legal to ask her out. That included Kenn, but Adrian thought she had a thing for one of his other top guards. Either way, the girl would be something here. What, was up to her.
Rebecca’s reddish blond hair was wild with frizzy curls and she brushed it back impatiently as she took her place, knowing she would only have this one chance to get noticed, to show these men she was useful too. She’d almost swallowed her tongue when Adrian signed in; sure he’d see her name and single her out…
“Anytime you’re ready, shooter,” Jeremy encouraged, eager to get the next round started, and the nervous girl nodded. She was ready now and she wanted them to know, needed Adrian to know.
Feeling the magic, the confidence of holding a gun she knew she could use, Becky pulled the trigger gently, lovingly. The light recoil was well controlled and she was smiling as she aimed and pulled, lined it up and pulled again. The bullets dug into the targets and she turned her eyes to the frowning blond man moving her way while the crowd waited for the call.
“Eight Hits, 5 bulls-eyes!”
They were as loud for her as they had been for Adrian and she was grinning in satisfaction as the blond stopped next to her, eyes impressed and displeased at the same time.
“That’s some impressive shooting, Miss Kelly.”
She grinned, face lighting up at his words, and then she dropped her head, remorseful. She hadn’t broken his rules lightly. Now she would pay the price.
“I’m sorry.” She moved toward Jeremy without waiting to be told, “I have to withdraw.”
The Level Two Eagle frowned as the crowd muttered and those who knew she hadn’t taken the class waited to see if Adrian would let her ruin her own chances here by owning up to it.
“Why?”
If she admitted she cheated, it would be a label she’d carry forever. “Because I…”
“She forgot she has a shift with the Vet. Right now, we’ll move onto the next round since we’re losing a shooter,” Adrian’s calm words weren’t doubted and his men were pleased. If Becky had ruined herself tonight, they couldn’t show any interest in her, not without losing their place by Adrian, and that was now something most of these men would never jeopardize.
“Rebecca is eliminated. Kenn will start round two.”
Becky smiled gratefully at Adrian as she left, very thankful he’d chosen to stop her admission. His men weren’t the only ones who were aware of all she’d risked to be noticed.
“Three shots this time and only those beyond 25 feet count. Bottom two will be eliminated.” Jeremy looked at Kenn, “You ready?”
The Marine opened fire in answer.

Becky isn’t sure of her place in Safe Haven. Before the War of 2012, she was a cheerleader, popular and flirty, much sought-after. Now, she’s just another survivor and she isn’t old enough yet to know how miraculous that is by itself. I hope she just needs time to grow up but I’m worried for her…Rick is dangerous.

Next Week: Rick

Life After War Wednesday #1- Cesar Castro Diaz

Once a week, we will get to know the “people” who make up the Life After War series through profiles, back stories, and glimpses into their mind. At the bottom of each edition, I’ll be placing a few extras, such as excerpts, personal thoughts, or questions to vote on. Please use the comments section for discussion.

To start us off, I chose to cover one of those who have perished during Life After War, thus far. Let’s look at the main bad guy from books 1-4:

Cesar Castro Diaz

Age: 43
Eyes: Black
Height: 5'10”
Weight: 195 lb
Birthday: 1/4/70

Gold Front Tooth
Kinked black curls
2 missing fingers- left hand

Before War: Infamous Mexican Guerilla Captain

After War: Leader of an invading army.

Quote: "I will have the Witch! Nothing will stop me when I come for her!"

Strengths.

- Once he makes up his mind, it's set and little will change his mind.

- He learned first hand how to keep control amid the violence and he does it well.

Weaknesses.

- Hates so much that he has no beauty in his heart.

-Underestimates his enemies.

FBI Notes

-The FBI has no US record. For Mexican, European, and other records, contact case manager.

Back-story

Cesar was raised by one of Mexico’s most ruthless men. Bred to be a warrior in his father’s army, he is a hardened man, who worked his way up the ranks through violence and manipulation. Like his father, Cesar loathes the United States and the number of American’s he's rumored to have killed before the war is over 200. A month after the war, it was 1000.

When the war came, Cesar took a large group of men and headed to the U.S border to rescue friends and family in Arizona and New Mexico detention centers. When he encountered no resistance, he seized the opportunity, invading. The vile man intends to keep anyone from rebuilding and hopes to seed the country with as many bastards as he can, leaving the US an occupied state.

Cesar hates America for many reasons but mostly for what he believes it did to his father.

Current Status: Deceased as of Book 4, Adrian’s Eagles.

Cause of Death: Multiple bullet wounds.

Killed by: Adrian Mitchel and Angela White at the end of book four, Adrian’s Eagles.

Vote

One of Cesar’s main goals is to seed America with his bastard’s, leaving the US an occupied land. He’s been carrying out that plan for months, being very careful to ensure the children are his. As of book 3, Safe Haven, the guerilla has conquered more than 20 towns and rarely spends a night without a slave chained to the pole of his filthy tent.

Question to consider: As of April, 2013, how many children do you think Cesar has on the way?

Something else to think about- Will any of those forced offspring be heard from?

Go here to vote. Results will be announced during next Wednesday’s post.

Excerpt:

Immune to the noise, Cesar watched the plump woman ride out of camp, the cries of her two young children making him sure she would do as he wanted. She would be missed for her cooking skills here but at Safe Haven, she would be an invaluable tool waiting for his orders.

His army was undisciplined, drunk on their successful invasion of the hated American’s and the wise guerilla Captain sensed that wouldn’t be enough to defeat the group of survivors from his dream. The blond man had been hard and Cesar recognized the future battle. When it came, he would be ready and none of them would stand. He would stop that vision from ever happening and there was a feeling of importance to the woman disappearing into the fog. Maria would be the key to that battle.

Cesar shoved the toddlers from his leg, waving at a slave to care for them. When his upset sons were older, they too would be sacrifices for the cause. The evil slave trader grinned, letting out a battle cry that was echoed by his men.

”Muerte a Estados Unidos!" Death to America.
